CPW 2007 I Got Served, and It Felt Grrreat!!

CPW 2007 I Got Served, and It Felt Grrreat!! Neo: You ever have that feeling where youre not sure if youre awake or still dreaming? Seleeke Flingai (me): All the time. Its called MIT, its the only way to fly. I dont care how you take it, but my CPW experience was one of the most liberating, invigorating, and awe-inspiring times of my life. Thats no exaggeration my four days at MIT changed my life more than Id ever expect. From the myriad of future classmates I met, to the numerous fraternities I visited, to the awesome trips to a breakdancing competition at Tufts University and my little venture to Chinatown, Ill never forget my time at CPW 2007. Wait, breakdancing competition?! Chinatown?!?!? You bet. You could spend your time at CPW relegated to the large, sprawling campus, where youd definitely have loads of fun. But my best experiences involved plenty of exploration. On Friday, many prefrosh and I attended an hour-long breakdancing class, which involved none other than yours truly huffing and puffing after many failed attempts at six steps, set ups, and a number of other breakdancing moves. After conversing with the two MIT students who taught the class (and learning about the large breakdancing community at the school and at Boston), I decided to trek over to Tufts University and catch a sweet breakdancing/popping competition that put You Got Served in its place. Dont worry, his right arm somehow isnt broken. The atmosphere was insane as a bevy of schools, ranging from our own MIT to the folks at Harvard, Boston U., Tufts, Brown, and more, danced their asses off with move after mouth-opening move. Youd be surprised at how agile and flexible these guys were, just as you would at how organized and choreographed their routines were. The improvisation was top notch too. But enough with the breakdancing on to Chinatown. On only my second trip on a subway EVER (my first was to the Breakdancing shindig the night before), I braved the Boston T train system and made my way down to Chinatown, where I went shopping crazy for my peeps back home. I brought home a Chinese newspaper and a few gifts for my special lady in Minnesota, along with a couple of trinkets for my family. My humble state of 10,000 lakes doesnt have anything even close to a Chinatown (and I live in Minneapolis, the states epicenter), so I HAD to make my way to this area on my stay here. I loved it, and if you ever have the chance, please check out this version of Chi-Town. Now, my entire time at CPW wasnt spent away from campus. I visited a few classes, including a pretty entertaining Differential Equations class (although I still have no idea what the Dirac delta-function is) and a likewise interesting Japanese II course. I went to a Study Abroad panel that happened to include blogger Sam, and at the awesome Battle of the Bands event on the last night of my stay, I caught a glimpse of blogger Bryan. But, as anyone else who went to the Battle of the Bands would tell you, the highlight of the show (other than the fantastic closer by Dirt Water Refuge, who very much reminded me of Zeppelin and other classic rock staples) was the inspired performance by the Ben + Marilee Jones Power Duo (this name is trademarked by meNO STEALING!!). Marilee sang her heart out with a magnificent performance of the Rolling Stones classic You Cant Always Get What You Want, while Ben rocked out (unplugged) with some great guitar work. The crowd went wild, swayed along with Marilee, and sang the lyrics in unison. Oh, and how could I forget the Beavers (MITs beloved and oh-so-cute-yet-not-very-intimidating mascot) crowd surfing later in the night? It was the perfect end to a perfect CPW. Will I remember CPW 2007 one, five, or even ten years from now? You betcha. My entire stay, which included my travels on campus and throughout Boston, is unlike anything Ive ever done, and I cant wait to do more exploring come this August. See you in the fall!! *If you didnt catch the Matrix quote at the top, shame on you.*

The Gilded Age A Very Significant Era - Free Essay Example

The Gilded Age was an era from the late 1800s to the early 1900s when business began to grow at a rapid rate. This era was known for the great amount of corruption taking place in the political world. Mark Twain first came up with the term Gilded Age to describe how America appeared to be perfect on the exterior, but it was truly rotten on the inside. The most important event that happened during this period of time was the development of the United States economy due to the quick growth of large corporations. Furthermore, many important businessmen, like Andrew Carnegie and John Rockefeller, significantly influenced the American population during this age.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   One of the most essential reasons as to why the economy began to develop at such a rapid rate was the establishment of large corporations. They played a huge role in the advancement of industrial production.   Some of the most important corporations were the Carnegie Steel Corporation, Rockefellers Standard Oil Company, and The Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company. Rockefeller controlled 90% of oil refineries in the United States and Carnegies Steel Corporation produced about 25% of steel in America. Many of the entrepreneurs who owned these corporations were seen as robber barons, due to the fact that they lacked morality and ethics. They would often find ways to get rid of or take over competitor companies. According to The Gospel of Wealth, a set of articles written by Carnegie, entrepreneurs would perform these cruel strategies for the greater good of the country. The triumph of these notorious companies can be credited to two tactics known as vertical and horizontal integration. Carnegie was well-known for using vertical integration. On the other hand, Rockefeller used horizontal integration. Furthermore, the expansion and growing of these corporations was due to the lack of interference from the government because of the laissez-fair policy. The federal government would also provide support to these large corporations.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   During the Gilded Age there were many important entrepreneurs who shaped the industrial economy. They influenced society as a whole with their views on wealth and the economy. Some of the most renowned captains of industry were Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, Henry Ford, J.P. Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and George Pullman. They all shared strong beliefs in the accumulation of wealth. However, Andrew Carnegies opinions were the most well-known. Carnegie wrote a set of articles known as The Gospel of Wealth in which he explained his views on wealth and the economy. Carnegie strongly believed in philanthropy, the act of giving money to causes that will benefit society in the long run. The rest of the businessmen also stood by this act. Carnegie gave away 90% of his wealth to establish libraries, and universities and Rockefeller had part in the founding of the University of Chicago. These notorious entrepreneurs also believed that the less fortunate wher e in that position because they did not work hard enough or they did not have enough motivation. The businessmen thought that the underprivileged citizens deserved to be in that situation, and that they were unworthy of any help if they did not work for it. The beliefs and views of the captains of industry had a great effect on how society viewed the economy. Theyre beliefs continue to inspire many businessmen to this day. Of course, not everyone agreed with the tactics used by these entrepreneurs, so Hebert Spencer came up with the theory of Social Darwinism to defend their merciless strategies. Social Darwinism was a theory that justified the actions of robber barons. It stated that survival of the fittest applied to business. Basically, it meant that they had the right to mistreat their workers and take over companies because they had demonstrated to be better than everyone else. This helped the businessmen defend themselves to the public. In their eyes their behavior was not morally wrong. This theory was also used to prove how African Americans were inferior to them. Many citizens applied Social Darwinism in any situation that they would be benefited from.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Gilded Age was a very significant era in history. It helped transform the economy with the help of large corporations. The captains of industry played a huge role during this era. Whether they were seen as captains of industry or robber barons, they revolutionized not only the countrys economy, but also peoples views on wealth. They set an example that is still followed by many billionaires today.

The Major Branches Of Government Essay - 1258 Words

The major branches of government consist of three parts, the Legislative Congress, the Executive Branch that being the U.S. presidency, and the judicial branches -Supreme Court and federal courts. There are also other factors of the government such as special procedural rules used in the Senate, interest groups that impact the legislative process and popular opinion and Senators’ votes, which all can limit the president’s law-making power. The Legislative Congress is the only branch of government that is directly elected by the people, unlike that of the President. The most important responsibility of Congress is that of making the laws. The two houses of Congress prepare and consider legislation, which is done by standing committees, and special committees in each house, as well as joint committees. The two houses have an equal voice in legislation, therefore, when dealing with a Bill a Bill is passed by each house separately and then must be signed by the president within 10 days, or it becomes law automatically. The President can veto a Bill; however, it can still become law in re-passage with a two-thirds majority vote in each house. Therefore, the President is basically answerable in his actions to the Legislative Congress. The Constitution and its 27 amendments indirectly add to the power of Congress. Roshelle Grinberg Due: December 3, 2010 Mr. Baldwin E5X-09 That Flag Should Not Be Protected The United States is known for being ‘land of the free’, a nation with a Declaration of Independence, as well, as a Constitution protecting the rights of it’s citizens. Wars have been fought and many people have died so we could have the rights that present today. Another court case, where the 5-4 majority ruled in favor of the defendant was United States v. Eichman in 1980, a year after the Johnson case. â€Å"In the case of United States v. Eichman, 496 U.S. 310 (1990), the law was struck down by the same five person ma jority of justices as in Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989).† [Source D] Multiple times in flag burning cases,

Threat of new entrants Low No scope for forming new company Figure 5: Porters five forces analysis of PepsiCo (Source: Tanwar, 2013, pp-15) Applying theories for strategic management for PepsiCo: There are many theories prevalent in strategic market analysis. Some of them are profit maximizing theory, competition based theory, resource based theory, survival based theory, agency based theory, and contingency theory (Hill, Jones Schilling, 2014). Profit maximizing theory is based on the concept maximization of profit on long term in an organization. Competition based theory helps in forming competitive advantages over the business rivals. Resource based theory has been formed by using the principles of source management. The capabilities of the firm and internal resources are responsible for determining the competitive advantage of the company. Survival based theory helps in deciding the various function and steps that are needed for the company to survive the current changed market condition. Agency based theory is useful for putting stress on the relationship between stakeholders and managers. It is necessary for succe ssful operations of business (David David, 2016). The contingency theory helps in drawing the idea for surrogacy planning. If any one of the plan or strategy fails to generate expected outcome, surrogate planning would help in minimizing the bad harm. Profit maximization theory in PepsiCo: The Company has chopped over 8000 jobs for boosting the marketing budget. Management of PepsiCo has formed strategies for implementing new cost savings techniques in their business operations. It is important for recognizing the effect of business operations from financial point of view (Tisdell, 2015). It would help in determining the profit margin of company. The various decisions taken by the management of PepsiCo helps in ensuring the product to be pushed for promotion, price that should be charged, and reducing the manufacturing cost. All these helps in ensuring the profit scale of the company. Profit maximization sometimes has bad effects on the estimation of cost and revenues. It becomes impossible for calculation of costing factor for each and every operation in the company (Henderson, 2014). However some methods can be used for determining the effective cost of their products. Trial and error method, evaluation of successful projects, rule of thumb for priority decision, and blind luck for assuming the best way are some of the ways that could be used for estimating cost and profit measurement. Human Resource Theory in PepsiCo: The human resource management is very important for any organization. The management theory has many benefits and limitations for PepsiCo. Management of PepsiCofocuses for acquainting and with the retention of highly skilled employees (Bratton Gold, 2012). The company can be benefited by the HR planning and it would help them in retaining their position in the global market. The security of the employment can be provided by the management of human resources. The workers should be trained to not be distracted from their work. Job analysis is a feature of human resource that can be used for determining the skills and duties of the employees. HR managers are responsible for deciding and processing the recruitment of staffs. PepsiCo has introduced performance appraisal for motivating the employees and increasing their performance. It would be helpful for achieving the goal of the company. The HR department of PepsiCo consider the employees as their asse ts and take care of their health and satisfaction. The HR program in PepsiCo includes one to one mentoring, self study mentoring and group mentoring (Henderson, 2014). These mentoring processes are helpful for developing, coaching, feedback, diverse thinking, and cross functional studying of the trainees. Contingency Theory in PepsiCo: The Company has focused on the growth of their business structure. Various management strategies and planning have been developed for attaining maximum profit from the market (Fiedler, 2015). However, there are many cases when the plan for operation fails to achieve the goal. In those cases, contingency planning can be used for nullifying the affect of failed planning. It helps in addressing all the issues of business operations. The contingency planning of PepsiCois customizable in nature. They have gained experience from their previous disputes and issues. The contingency planning helps in three fold aspects of business operations. It would help PepsiCo in understanding that there is no single way for managing people and operations in their organization (Henderson, 2014). The managers of PepsiCo can use it for analysing various situational and individual prospects of deciding their course of action. Planning development- The labour dispute requires consultants for assisting them in development of planning from every aspect of operations (Leigh Blakely, 2013). The structure helped them in forming detail strategy and tactic. Plan facilitation- PepsiCohad formed for the need of objective assessment for completely developing plan (Harman Albright, 2014). The entire management of PepsiCowill meet the requirements of forming solutions to specifically strike problems. Recommendations for improving the management of PepsiCo:The management system of PepsiCo can be benefited largely by forming new strategies for development. The management theory in PepsiCo can be improved by following some points. Human Resource Approach The human resource approach for strategic management has applied the psychological aspects of human in organization management. It has emphasized on the prospect of managing people by understanding their needs. Hawthorne, McGregors X and Y theory, and Maslows hierarchy of needs are some of the contributors to this approach (Armstrong Taylor, 2014). Hence, PepsiCo can use this approach in strategy management for motivating its employees. These theories would be helpful to PepsiCo for meeting the employees satisfaction level and encouraging them for better performance. Quantitative approach- The quantitative approach emphasizes on the group methods for deciding the business processes. The decision making can be really benefited by using this approach for strategic management of PepsiCo. It can be referred to as a science of operational research. The tools included in this approach are statistics, decision tree, linear programming and network analysis (Ramondo, 2014). These tools can be really helpful for PepsiCo in their business operations. The quality control and inventory management are also included in this approach. Classical approach- The classical approach for management system can help PepsiCo in encompassing the science of management and administration (Bauer et al., 2015). It would help in increasing the productivity of the company. The motivation of an individual worker has been concerned in this approach. It uses the management principles for managing and structuring the organization. Hence, PepsiCo can use this approach of strategic management for improving its productivity. Conclusion The essay has shown the use of strategic management in any business organization. Or Mice And Men Report Essay Example For Students

Or Mice And Men Report Essay Of Mice and Men takes place sometime during the Depression of the 1930 s. The book starts off next to a stream near the Salinas River, a few miles South of Soledad. Then the setting moves to an isolated, lonely looking ranch, where the main part of the story takes place. Then at the end of the book, the setting comes back to where it started. Characters: George – the main character of the book. He is a caring, understanding, and dreams of owning his own piece of land. Lennie – the loyal friend of George. He has a child’s mind and a giant’s body. It is these contrasting qualities that cause him problems. Old Candy – one of the lonely ranch workers. He is a cripple, working as a ‘Swamper’. Crooks – named for his crooked body; he is a proud Negro man that works on the Ranch. He is neat and has a mind of his own. He is a lonely character, who is discriminated against, due to his race. Slim – a ranch worker with leadership qualities. He commands respect from all on the ranch. Curley – the boss’s son who is a light weight boxer. He picks fights with everybody on the ranch. Curley’s wife – the only woman on the ranch. She is very flirtatious. Plot: George and Lennie live during the depression and they wander from town to town doing jobs but Lennie always gets them in trouble. For example, this girl thought Lennie was trying to rape her when he was really just feeling her dress since he liked the material. Lennie dreams of owning a rabbit farm and is mentally retarded. Sometimes he ends up killing animals because he is so strong. When he accidentally kills Curley’s wife problems arise and George has to kill him so they won’t lock him up. Theme: I think that this novel’s theme was loneliness. All of the workers were lonely in a sense, although they had people around them to talk to. They couldn’t let out any of their feelings because another worker could use it against them. The last line of the book– â€Å"What the hell do you suppose is eatin’ them two guys? †Ã¢â‚¬â€œis said by Carlson. Now, why would any person with any sense of sympathy or knowledge of others wonder that? The man just killed his best friend but Carlson didn’t seem to understand because he never had had a good friend, not one that he would feel bad for at least. These men never knew what it is like to share. They have always had to be strong. This to me shows that they were the best examples of loneliness. Conflict: George is the kind-hearted ranch hand who is concerned about his friend Lennie and watches out for him. Because he has a giant’s body and a child’s mind, Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife; at the same time he kills the dream of owning a farm that has kept George and Lennie positive about the future. The climax occurs when Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife. George knows that he can no longer save Lennie, for Curley will want revenge. Of Mice and Men ends in tragedy. George feels compelled to mercifully kill his friend and companion, Lennie, in order to save him from a brutal death. Evaluation: The book was sad, but it truly is a great. It describes so many things about life. Some examples are: how dreams help give meaning to life, the importance of friendship, and how life unabashedly kicks you repeatedly down. If you are looking for a book that depicts a rosy existence, this is not the one.

And there are some topics that are open ended and can be written about anything that the child wants to write about. For kids who are reading this you may think that you would have no problem writing a topic for an opinion essay for fifth graders. After all, they are young and so young writing about anything is just part of the process of getting older. This makes you wonder what you should do about it.When you think about it, the fact that your five-year-old can explain the Internet to you means that they are quite smart. That is not something that most parents realize and you wonder how much further they can get with their education and how much farther you can push them. But the great thing is that the younger the kid is the easier it is to teach them and that is when they get into fifth grade. So if you want to see how easy it is to write a topic for an opinion essay for fifth graders, then go back and read the last article that you read. Accounting Cycle free essay sample

This paper seeks to prepare a training handout to help non-finance directors understand the accounting cycle. The paper starts with the definition of accounting cycle and then followed by the discussion of each step involved in the process with the cycle. The accounting cycle is a series of steps which are repeated every accounting period.   An accounting period may refer to time an interval when financial statements; hence it could be monthly or quarter or yearly. Usually it is monthly since corporations or business entities have their board meetings where management is required to provide the board members or directors an update of information on what is happening with the company and outside the company using financial reports or financial statements.  Ã‚   The   process will have to start with an identification of the transaction from the original source documents such as invoice, official receipts, checks that are cancelled, time cards and summaries, contracts, purchase invoice with requisitions slips and corresponding purchase orders if there are any. We will write a custom essay sample on Accounting Cycle or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Identify the transactions. In identifying the transaction, there is a need to determine whether the transaction is recordable or not. What will determine of what is recordable transaction is the effect of the transaction on the accounting elements which include the assets, liabilities, owners’ equity, revenues and expenses (Meigs and Meigs.1995). If indeed   the document verified warrants the recording of the transaction because the one or a combination of the accounting elements would be affected then, the accountant or the bookkeeper must extract the following information the from the documents:   the date, amount,   description or purpose of the transaction, name and address of the other parties involved if possible. Analyze the transactions. This will be followed by the analysis of the transaction where the accountant or bookkeeper will determine on which of the accounting elements are affected (Meigs and Meigs.1995). The possible effects are increase or decrease by a certain amount. Make and record the journal entries in the journals.   Make journal entries based on the transactions as analyzed.   Ã‚  Making journal entries involves making a debit or a number of debits and credit or a number of credits   and making its sure that   total debits   equal to total credits under the double entry bookkeeping system. In preparing the journal entries, it must be noted that the journal are kept in chronological order where the transactions first occurring during the month should be recorded ahead of the latter ones (Meigs and Meigs.1995). There is wisdom for doing this, since it is easier to locate and trace things when done this way and to allow regularity of recording as the accountant is expected to perform his or her functions regularly.   With the advent of computers, this chronological recording of transactions and events is encouraged if not automatic because documents, such as receipts and invoices, must come in their serial numbers as transactions are punched in into computer accounting system on a first come first served basis everyday. The journals may normally include the sales journal, purchase journal, cash receipts journal, cash payments journal and the general journal (Smartacus Corporation, 2008).   Cash transactions are recorded either in cash receipts or cash disbursements journal, while non-cash sale and purchases are recorded in the sales journal and purchase journal respectively. What cannot be recorded in the four special journals is recorded in general journal. Post to the Ledger. This process involves the transfer of journal entries or their summaries as afforded by the special journal to the general ledger. Before the transfer to the ledger, the accountant must make it sure that the total debits are equal to total credits from the journal books. Each account title is represented by a separate ledger. An accountant can never arrive at the correct ledger balances which must be derived at the end of the month also assuming again the financial statements are prepared monthly (Smartacus Corporation, 2008). Prepare the unadjusted trial balance. This is done by calculating to verify the sum of the debit and credit and to prove their equality. If the same are not in balance, there is an indication of an error along the way (Meigs and Meigs.1995). Therefore, before the accountant proceeds further, the accountant should go back and try to check the errors from identification to posting. Prepare the necessary adjustments. Adjusting entries are needed to update accounts that were originally recorded as well to recognize accrued and deferred items. This may include providing for bad debts expense from accounts receivable where collectibility is doubtful, providing for depreciation for depreciable non-current assets such as building and equipments.   Other adjustments include accruals and deferrals. Prepare adjusted trial balance. At this stage, the amounts from adjusting entries are integrated or combined to the balances from the trial balance; hence it is called, adjusted trial balances. It is best to prepare a worksheet from the unadjusted trial plus and minus and adjustments in producing the adjusted trial balance (Meigs and Meigs.1995). The worksheet should be extended to provide for income statement and balance sheet columns which must have debit and credit columns Prepare the financial statements. Preparation of the financial statements is the end products of the accounting cycle for purposes of providing information to decision makers (Smartacus Corporation, 2008). Financial statements are therefore making in proper form the data coming from the ten-column worksheet from which the adjusted trial balance and data from the income statement and balance sheet columns are found.

Stereotypes Essays - Stereotypes, Social Psychology, Discrimination

Stereotypes Essays - Stereotypes, Social Psychology, Discrimination Stereotypes Stereotypes are the organizational factors that virtually shape the way we think in 20th century America. They somehow manage to categorize some of lifes most complex matters into nice distinct sections. Classifications and organization, at first glance seem to be useful in distinguishing various aspects of modern life. However, these grouping methods can be very inaccurate, leaving erroneous ideas in the minds of citizens on a global level. Stereotypes, though originating as convenient sorting mechanisms, instead, influence our thinking process. By instituting broad categories, establishing virtually immovable terms, and, often, being mistakenly identified as facts, stereotypes affect the mental process of humans. Originally used as an organizational tool, stereotypes were simply broad generalizations about subject matters. These ideas werent necessarily meant to cause the feelings of anger that they do today, but to classify ideas. However, possibly the most apparent problem with stereotypes is that the sort very intricate subject matter into large, broad categories. For example, human beings are too complex to use generalizations like, all blondes are dumb or all smart people are nerds. Stereotypes use wide terms, to simplify subject matter, but this attempt often ends in an inaccurate result. Despite their wide generalizations, stereotypes establish virtually immovable terms. For example, Third World countries were hastily grouped together not because of social or economic similarities, but out of convenience. Since that time, the industrialized nations have harbored this stereotype that the third world is land of starving children and savage tribes. Despite decades of vast improvement, this stereotype remains unchanged. This rigid stereotype has caused many citizens to embrace a false view of the Third World nations and its citizens. Stereotypes, clearly, should not be mistaken for factual information. Although there may be a certain amount of truth to the statement, the generalization is often inaccurate. Unfortunately, many people believe this information to be not only truthful, but factual. Since most Americans have not visited a Third World country, they believe many misconceptions to be true. In reality, these stereotypes are often wrong. They may apply in some instances, but they should not be considered factual. Through establishing broad categories, creating immovable terms, and being mistakenly identified as facts, stereotypes often place inaccurate ideas in the peoples minds. They have a huge impact on the thought process and ideas. As increasingly more and more people become aware of this error, many of the stereotypes we now embrace will become obsolete.
